WRITING SEXUAL SUBCULTURES: SEX WORK

WRITING SEXUAL SUBCULTURES: SEX WORK

Facilitator: Matt Skully
Duration: 2 hours

Sex workers have long been central figures in literature—written about, mythologized, silenced, and criminalised. But when sex workers write themselves into history—through memoirs, fiction, poetry, and hybrid forms—the result is a radical reshaping of narrative power. This workshop explores how sex workers and their allies have used the blurred space between fact and fiction to reclaim voice, challenge stigma, and document lived experience.

Focusing on historical and contemporary texts by and about sex workers, Writing Sexual Subcultures: Sex Work, invites participants to engage with writing that resists binary thinking—about genre, morality, and identity.

Matt Skully is a writer, curator, performer, sex worker and event producer who has worked within the sex and fetish industry for 20 years. He currently runs a series of workshops ‘writing sexual subcultures’ which will be running as a summer and autumn course in collaboration with the UK Leather and Fetish Archive at Bishopsgate Institute, London and works at the world famous Torture Garden.

The workshop also touches on colon cleansing in relation to sexual health, all in a safe and lighthearted environment.

Talya brings a fresh (and funny) perspective to digestion, detox, and nutrition—though she definitely talks more about poop than food. After healing her own belly struggles, she now mixes science with silliness to help others connect with their gut in a whole new way. Expect laughs, lightness, and maybe a chocolate poop emoji too.

From a grounded loving place, participants of all genders and sexualities will be invited to get creative and come up with their “pleasure artpiece” and the lucky one (or two, or three…) of the willing recipients will be determined by the spins of the magical and mysterious shiny gay bottle. RECLAIMING SOFTNESS: RESISTANCE, CARE, AND COLLECTIVE STRENGTH

RECLAIMING SOFTNESS: RESISTANCE, CARE, AND COLLECTIVE STRENGTH

Hosted by Ruhaina

They want to take our joy—our laughter, our pleasure, our softness. They tell us we are too much, too queer, too Black, too brown, too Asian, too trans, too tender to exist fully. And yet, we are here. We love, we dance, we resist. This panel, featuring Cat, Ivy Monteiro & Sailesh, is about reclaiming joy as an act of defiance. How do we protect our queer, trans, BIPOC bodies—not just from harm, but for pleasure, love, and softness? How do we hold each other when the world demands our suffering? Joy is not a privilege. It is our birthright—our joie de vivre, our resistance, our survival!

AFTER RUIN: P. ELDRIDGE & RUSSELL REED

AFTER RUIN: P. ELDRIDGE & RUSSELL REED

After Ruin is a site-specific program exploring two intertwined acts of reclamation occurring at WHOLE Festival—one queer and one ecological—as the former center of the global brown coal industry transforms into an unlikely site of outsider world-building. By unearthing the land’s complex history, After Ruin contends with the possibility of life after ruin, guided by the global queer community’s unique expertise in mourning, loss, resilience, and play. Curated by P. Eldridge (SISSY ANARCHY) and Russell Reed (Geographer), this triptych unfolds through collaborations with select artists at the Ambient Stage, tracing the history of Ferropolis from the primordial to the present.
